A Parent Guide to Hearing Loss
Mainstream classrooms are general education classrooms where you would usually see typically developing students. If a child with a disability were to be a part of this mainstream classroom or "mainstreamed," this means that they are placed in a classroom with typically developing peers with access to the general curriculum and all the activities their typically developing peers participate in (specials, etc).
PROS:
-
The child has a lot of access to a differing social environment
-
They will have access to the general curriculum
-
There is a lot of opportunity for peer modeling
CONS:
-
May not be on the same level as the other children
-
Will be expected to be a part of the general curriculum
-
May feel isolated
-
May not have as much one-on-one time
