Mainstream classrooms are general education classrooms where you would usually see typically developing students. If a child with a disability were to be a part of this mainstream classroom or "mainstreamed," this means that they are placed in a classroom with typically developing peers with access to the general curriculum and all the activities their typically developing peers participate in (specials, etc).

PROS:

  • The child has a lot of access to a differing social environment

  •  They will have access to the general curriculum

  • There is a lot of opportunity for peer modeling

CONS:

  • May not be on the same level as the other children

  • Will be expected to be a part of the general curriculum

  • May feel isolated

  • May not have as much one-on-one time
