Self-contained classrooms are typically smaller classrooms with a fewer number of students. Unlike mainstream classrooms, these self-contained classrooms are created to help students with special needs and disabilities. Self-contained classrooms are generally comprised of about 10 students who are instructed by special education teacher. They will also have at least one paraeducator (aid) who provides instructional support to the teacher.

PROS:

  • The child may be around others with the same disabilities

  • The student/teacher ratio is about 10:1 vs. 20-30:1

  • The child is getting copious amounts of supports

CONS:

  • There is very limited social interactions with their typically developing peers

  • Typically don't have access to the general curriculu
